Rendell shuts down major highways — update

Governor Rendell is shutting down most of the major roadways in central and southern Pennsylvania. All of I-78 and I-83 have been closed, and I-81 is shut down from the Maryland borther up to I-80.  At two o’clock, the Schuylkill Expressway will be closed.

The Turnpike and I-95 will remain open, but certain vehicles (motorcycles, RVs, and large trucks, among others) are banned from travel on the Pike, and the speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles per hour.

Rendell says this is the broadest highway closure he’s ordered during his tenure. He’s mobilized 1,100 members of the Pennsylvania National Guard — they’re helping the State Police and PennDOT with road maintenance, and will also assist stranded drivers.

One Response to Rendell shuts down major highways — update

  1. Mike Santagata says:

Wouldn’t it be better for a WARNING
to go out an hour or so before actual closing????
Like: I-78, etc.c will be closing at 2:00 PM
Please leave work immediately or make arrangements to stay where you are until roads are open again.

To just close them instantly is completely inconveniencing anybody who had to work today!!!

    Consider the hard-working citizens first!!
